Story Synopsis:
Fans of the science-fiction genre will agree, RoboCop is Paul Verhoeven’s special effects-laden cult phenomenon. This is the unrated director’s cut, including excessively violent shots cut from the theatrical release to avoid an X rating. Peter Weller stars as the slain police officer turned into a cyborg, struggling to reclaim his memory and avenge his own death. This is a brutally violent story of sadistic crime in Old Detroit. Part man, part machine, all cop-that’s the essence of RoboCop.
DVD Picture:
The DVD is not anamorphic, nor is it THX®-quality assured, and when compared to the THX digitally mastered LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 14 and 24, images appear slightly sharper with more detail and definition. Sometimes the picture appears digital and over-enhanced with background noise. Otherwise, color fidelity is excellent with natural fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep, solid blacks. Images are generally sharp and detailed with fine background delineation, especially when compared to the softer-looking LaserDiscs. This visual presentation will surely please fans of the movie. The aspect ratio is 1.66:1. An Orion DVD was reviewed in Issue 26.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital soundtrack is a matrix encoded Dolby Surround presentation. While the soundtrack is conventional movie stereo, there are occasional aggressive surround effects and deep bass which effectively supports the brutally bloody picture.
