Story Synopsis:
Widow Annie Wilson (Blanchett) has The Gift of clairvoyancy, and she reads the fortunes of the tormented townsfolk of Brixton, Georgia. Reaching out to troubled neighbors, Annie realizes that every gift has its blessing, and soon finds herself gettying too involved in the messages of her cards. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture exhibits image quality that is quite lovely. Colors are easy-on-the-eyes, with accurate fleshtones, well-balanced hues and deep blacks. Images are sharp and detailed, with good contrast and shadow delineation. Overall the picture is very nicely rendered, with little edge enhancement and occasionally noticed shimmering in the finer details. At times, film grain is revealed from the source element, but overall the image is solid. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is usually of a quiescent nature and is largely driven by the dialogue, but is also worthy of commendation for its tasteful use of dimension with atmospheric effects and the music. If you use a back surround decoder, you will most certainly want to engage it for this soundtrack. The music score is a nice recording, and its integration into the listening space is impressive and engrossing. There are moments when the use of deep bass effects is justified, with generally moderate yet deep, effective visceral delivery. The transcient POV sequences tend to be a dynamic contrast with the rest of the soundtrack, with aggresive engagement of the entire soundfield. Voices are rendered with notably natural-sounding tonality, and quite effective spatial integration. (Perry Sun)
