WSR Narrative Review

Story Synopsis:
Willis stars as Korben Dallas, a 23rd century airborne cabbie who finds himself in a fight to save the world. It has been prophesied that, at this time, only the alignment of the four elements-earth, fire, air, water-plus a mysterious fifth element, will have the ability to stop the forces of evil. When a mysterious woman (Jovovich) literally falls into Dallas’ cab, he learns of the prophecy, that she is the fifth element-and he must help her save the world.

DVD Picture:
The Sony High Definition picture presents superb quality with excellent color fidelity, natural fleshtones, rich and vibrant colors and deep, solid blacks on both the LaserDisc and DVD versions. The computer-created sequences are slightly subdued in color saturation and sharpness, but are nonetheless fascinating. Color saturation is richer in the DVD component anamorphic format, exhibiting extremely sharp and detailed images with virtually no chroma noise. This is one of the best picture presentations reviewed in this magazine for either LaserDisc or DVD. The LaserDisc, and anamorphic and letterbox DVD, aspect ratios measure 2.35:1.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is quite a spatial experience though the fidelity is rather irritating at moments. Nonetheless, this is a terrific soundfield design that fully utilizes the holosonic capabilities of the 5.1-channel format. Sound effects are directionalized with an aggressive split surround presence. Bass extends to below 25Hz with effective .1 low frequency effects. The music score sounds harmonically rich, especially in the scene with the opera singing alien Diva Plavalaguna. Dialogue generally sounds natural with excellent spatial integration.
