Story Synopsis:
Based on the book “Shoeless Joe” by W.P. Kinsella, Field Of Dreams tells the inspirational tale of an Iowa farmer’s (Kevin Costner) dreams come true. “If you build it, he will come,” are the famous words that re-direct his life as he turns his cornfield into a baseball diamond.
DVD Picture:
Although the dual layered DVD is not anamorphic, it is sharper, with better detail and clarity, when compared to the LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 5 and 21. Colors are not quite as orange, as was apparent on the LaserDiscs’ fleshtones. All other aspects are similar. Colors are still slightly over-saturated, but do not necessarily look bad-just unnatural. There is a slight dark effect over the entire picture, which is mediocre in its rendering of contrast, while shadow delineation is sometimes good. Minor digital noise is apparent, as are artifacts. The DVD is matted at 1.78:1.
Soundtrack:
The DVD’s Dolby® Surround matrix encoded Dolby Digital soundtrack shares similar character with the LaserDisc matrix PCM version. The Dolby Digital version has been slightly re-equalized and sounds fuller with even deeper low frequency extension compared to the spatial sounding matrix PCM soundtrack. Otherwise, both soundtracks have effective, but subtle surround envelopment, spatial dialogue, and a nicely recorded music score.
