Notes

Special Notes:
Jacket erroneously credits “enhanced for 16:9 TVs” -- the disc is non-anamorphic widescreen.

Story Synopsis:
Based upon the novel by Walter Tevis and Robert Rossen’s film “The Hustler,” Martin Scorsese’s “The Color Of Money” is substantial enough of a film to stand on its own. Banned from playing pool professionally in The Hustler, Fast Eddie Felson (Newman who finally won an Oscar® for this role) has become a frontman for younger hustlers. His latest find is arrogant Vincent (Cruise), a kid who is just like Eddie was when he was young. Knowing what happened to Eddie makes one realize that Vince should change his ways before all bets are off. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
Mislabeled on the jacket as being “enhanced for 16:9 televisions,” the 1.85:1 DVD is not anamorphically enhanced. The picture is generally satisfying, with pleasing sharpness and detail. Some scenes have a soft or hazy appearance, inherent in the cinematography. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep, endless blacks. Contrast seems a bit low, but shadow delineation in the dingey bars and billiard halls is satisfactory. Pixelization causes the break up of images, and can be distracting at times. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 4.1-channel remastered soundtrack exhibits rather palpable spatiality for the music, with liberal engagement of the surrounds. The original audio's dated fidelity should not be too much of a distracting factor. Voices sound abundantly clear with reasonably compelling natural tonality. There is generally modest low end content with the music, which also happens to be the predominant spatial element of this soundtrack (much of which focuses on the dialogue). (Perry Sun)
