Story Synopsis:
With themes similar to the Biblical story of Moses, and experiences not unlike those in Gulliver’s Travels, audiences young and old should enjoy this classic tale about the forces of good and evil. Though small in stature, Willow (Davis) has the courage of a giant. Chosen to protect an infant who is destined to end the reign of an evil sorceress, Willow sets out on a quest meeting and inevitably joining forces with a swordsman named Madmartigan (Kilmer). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture exhibits images that are sharp and nicely detailed, with good contrast and shadow delineation. Colors are nicely balanced with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. There is some apparent edge enhancement and occasional pixelization. The picture doesn’t have the polished look of today’s best looking DVDs, but the picture serves the story well. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The soundtrack for this DVD is remastered Dolby® Digital 5.1. The sonic experience overall should be satisfying, with a fairly generous sense of spaciousness throughout. The music has particularly benefited from this soundtrack purposing, with James Horner’s music score having a rich, expansive presence across the screen. The sense of dimension all around is usually subtle, with a balance toward the screen channels, yet the gentle to moderate use of the surrounds should still be welcome. The dated fidelity somewhat limits the natural tonality of voices and certain effects, but not in a distracting manner. Bass extension is adequately palpable, imparting a pleasing low-end foundation to the music. The .1 LFE is reserved for accentuating certain effects. (Perry Sun)
