Story Synopsis:
Set in the late 1800s (or is it?), a small, secluded, and peaceful community is haunted by the forest that surrounds them. Creatures referred to as “those who we don’t speak of” are spoken of quite often among the fearful villagers. No one enters the forest for any reason...a truce that has kept the peace between the villagers and the forest dwellers. But when Lucious Hunt (Phoenix) is injured in a manner that had been unheard of in The Village, his beloved Ivy Walker (Howard) dares to cross the forest in search of medicine. M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs) manages to muster some suspense once again for this fun thrill ride. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture exhibits engulfing images, thanks in part to beautiful cinematography by Roger Deakins. Colors have a natural balance, with accurate fleshtones, in a color palette that is somewhat understated and complementary to the simplistic lifestyle of the villagers. The picture can be awash in warm yellows, which symbolize safety in the story and chromatically contrast the danger of the reds, symbolic of the evil forest dwellers. Unfortunately, bit rate can be a bit low, and the picture visually suffers at times. The picture can appear smeared, and pixel breakup can be noticed. Edge enhancement is rarely an issue, however. Overall, this is an attractive picture, though some minor problems are present. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
Creating a deeply engrossing, energized DVD soundtrack is not an easy task to accomplish, but the mixers behind this Dolby® Digital Surround EX™ soundtrack hit the nail on the head. Each fragment of the soundtrack is mixed well, creating an environment that is sure to please. The inclusion of a matrixed center back channel allows for improved imaging on the back wall, and really adds to the suspense. There are moments throughout the film that could have included more surround activity to highten the mood, but most of the time the entire palette is used well. LFE channel activity is prominent at times, with deep, strong bass from each of the seven loudspeakers. Music is reproduced well, also using each available channel to bring life and suspence to the soundstage. With very pure fidelity and fantastic dimensionality, the soundtrack seems to blend the loudspeakers out of the room and create a deeply engrossing holosonic™ experience. (Danny Richelieu)
