Story Synopsis:
A frequent topic for television and screen is the corrupt power mob gangsters had over thriving American cities in the difficult times of the 1930s. With The Untouchables, we are taken to Prohibition-era Chicago and the arrogance of larger-than-life kingpin Al Capone (De Niro). One lawman, Eliot Ness (Costner), had the unswerving confidence to bring Capone to justice, and with the help of Jim Malone (Connery, who won a Supporting Actor Oscar® for his role), an honest cop, Ness hatches a plan to get his man. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
Compared to the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 30, the anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD features a picture with colors that are much warmer and better balanced. Fleshtones are nicely rendered, and blacks are quite deep. Hues are bold and fully saturated, sometimes pushing the border of oversaturation. Images are sharp, though sometimes the picture is wanting in definition and clarity. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered, though some visual information tends to get lost in the darker scenes. Overall, the picture should surely please, with few distractions in the way of pixelization or edge enhancement. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack, as with the LaserDisc, renders a rather wide and compelling soundstage for the music. Surround activity tends to be intermittent, though there are moments with aggressive engagement that tend to be mono-centric. Dialogue is forward-sounding and has the sonic characteristics of an ADR production. Occasional bass boost is provided by .1 LFE channel, but to no dramatic effect. The predominant multichannel element of this soundtrack is the music. (Perry Sun)
