Story Synopsis:
Based on the French film La Totale and the screenplay by Claude Zidi, Simon Michael and Didler Kaminka, True Lies is about special agent Harry Tasker (Schwarzenegger) who is forced to live a double life. To his wife Helen (Curtis), he is merely a dull computer salesman. But when his two lives unexpectedly collide, both Harry and Helen find themselves in the clutches of international terrorists fighting to save their marriage and their lives. Curtis’ transformation from meek suburban wife to sexy international crimefighter is thrilling. This was the third collaboration between director Cameron and star Swarzenegger (The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day).
DVD Picture:
The 2.32:1 DVD picture is not anamorphically enhanced, but when viewed in component video is generally pleasing. Color balance is absolutely natural throughout, with accurately rendered fleshtones, rich stylized colors and deep, pure blacks. Fine background detail is apparent throughout. However, the picture sometimes appears digitally harsh, with hard, unnatural edges. Edge overenhancement is apparent as well. The DVD is absolutely pleasing, but is not as pristine as anamorphically enhanced DVDs available today.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack is stunning, with extraordinary dynamic range and an aggressive surround presence. Deep bass is exceptional, with powerful .1 LFE below 25Hz. The sound is sure to please with its dramatic and exhilarating soundfield dimension and excitement.
DVD/Previously Reviewed LD Comparative Review:
The 2.32:1 DVD is not anamorphically enhanced, and when viewed in component video and compared to the previously reviewed LaserDiscs reviewed in Issues 12 and 30. The DVD is more solid than the LaserDiscs, with less noise and improved clarity throughout. Color balance is very similar and is absolutely natural throughout, with accurately rendered fleshtones, rich sometimes stylized colors and deep, pure blacks. Finer background detail is apparent throughout. However, the DVD sometimes appears digitally harsh, with hard, unnatural edges and compression pixelization. The DVD is absolutely pleasing, but is not as pristine as other anamorphically enhanced DVDs available today.
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtracks is stunning, with an extraordinary dynamic range and an aggressive surround presence with exceptional deep bass and powerful .1 LFE below 25Hz. The soundtrack is full of exhilarating soundfield dimension and excitement.
