Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel Badge Of Evil by Whit Masterson, this version of Touch Of Evil (produced by Rick Schmidlin and edited by Walter Murch) is an attempt at reediting the theatrically released version (edited by Universal Pictures) to what writer/director/star Orson Welles originally intended based on his 58-page memo (that’s included in the special features). The story involves a corrupt American police chief (Welles), a Mexican narcotics investigator (Heston) and his inquisitive wife (played deliciously by Janet Leigh). (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a good gray scale with pleasing contrast. Blacks are just shy of true depth. Images can seem just slightly soft, but otherwise detail and definition are nicely rendered. Source element dirt and artifacts are minimal, and there are no major distractions for a picture that is quite solid and should surely please. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 2.0 soundtrack is big fat mono. When Dolby ProLogic®-decoded, the audio is properly placed in the center channel. Although the monaural sound is undistinguished with inherent anomalies, this is still a soundtrack not to be missed for those who favor studying the creativity of film sound. Walter Murch re-worked the soundtrack, in accordance to the original notes of Orson Welles. (Perry Sun)
