Story Synopsis:
The Gulf War is over and most of the soldiers are partying and planning their homecoming, four American soldiers (Clooney, Wahlberg, Cube & Jonze) are planning their treasure hunt for stolen Kuwaiti gold. But these Three Kings (Jonze’s character was allowed to tag along) are sidetracked from their selfish plans to help a group of Iraqi prisoners to safety in a refugee camp.
DVD Picture:
Shot in a creative frenzy using different film stocks (see the production notes section of the special features menu), the anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD, viewed in component video, has an in-your-face, sometimes harsh and sometimes surreal appearance. Shadow delineation is nicely rendered, with good visual information in the darkest scenes. With the intentional stylization in mind, the picture exhibits a solid, pleasing visual experience that will surely please in all aspects.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack delivers remarkable fidelity, but is a mixed bag in terms of dimension. The audio tends to be biased toward the screen with very subtle surround envelopment, but the dimensional soundfield comes alive with the more active scenes consisting of gunfire and explosions that penetrate the split surrounds. The soundstage is stereophonic in nature throughout, but the rendering of the outdoors may have been more effective with the creation of a more enveloping holosonic listening space. The conservative usage of the surrounds could have been deliberate in trying to establish some consistency with the quiet desert settings, and also to provide dramatic contrast with the dynamic, spatially active sequences. The music is well recorded and delivers a soundstage that is effectively wide and expansive. Dialogue often exhibits ADR-production characteristics, but is otherwise well recorded and spatially integrated. Deep bass utilization, during active scenes, is deep to below 25Hz, powerful and sometimes intense with some .1 LFE enhancement.
