Notes

Story Synopsis:
Based on the story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tarzan tells the tale of the baby boy orphaned by a shipwreck and is rescued and reared by a family of gorillas. Tarzan acts and reacts like his simian family but wonders why he doesn’t look like them. His jungle reality is then turned upside down with the arrival of explorers, including the engaging young Jane. All the charming heroes, nasty villains and silly songs we’ve come to expect in a Disney animated epic. Phil Collins picked up an Oscar® for Best Original Song (“You’ll Be In My Heart”).

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced picture, viewed in component video exhibits animated imagery that is pure magic. Colors are eye-popping and vibrant, with breathtaking shades. Imagery is sharp and defined, with no artifacts or pixelization to distract. Shadows, reflections and fine details are beautifully showcased throughout. The picture is solid and will surely impress. The windowboxed picture measures 1.70:1, anamorphic and letterbox.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.0-channel discrete soundtrack has been correctly mastered for this special Collector’s Edition. The previously released DVD’s soundtrack was problematic in that there was a problem with the channel assignments. The left front and surround channels are combined. However, this is a stupendous sonic presentation that may well be the best soundtrack production yet from Disney’s recent string of animation features. The entire 5.0-channel soundfield is consistently and effectively utilized, resulting in a holosonic experience which adds immeasurably to the film’s entertainment and comprises a vital component of the storytelling. The fidelity is superb, with all aspects of the sound mix nicely integrated. Sound effects are multidimensional throughout, placing you in a 360-degree soundfield and subsequently transporting you to the spacious world of the jungle. The split surrounds are engaged, much more prominently and convincingly than many 5.1-channel film soundtracks. You’ll derive an enhanced feeling of spaciousness and dimension with the use of a back surround channel decoder, such as the SMART Devices’ Center Surround 3X used for this review. Phil Collins’ wonderful music score and songs are very well-recorded, and integrated into the soundtrack with a prominent, often aggressive presence that is exciting to hear. Deep bass, when engaged, is impressively powerful and deep, with extension to below 25Hz. The only weak link with this film’s audio is the dialogue, which is expectedly ADR-produced and has a close-up presence that sounds a bit detached from the environments depicted by the visual events. Nonetheless, this is an honest-to-good, dynamically exciting soundtrack that will surely entertain and serve as a cornerstone for home theatre demonstration material.
