Story Synopsis:
Based on the book by Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers is a futuristic adventure about a handful of dedicated soldiers who engage in intergalactic warfare with terrifying alien insects. Upon graduating from high school and against his parents wishes, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) joins the mobile infantry to win the heart of his girlfriend (Denise Richards), who plans to become a starship pilot. But when the Bugs wipe his home off the map, killing over eight million people, Johnny becomes determined to destroy the insect threat to human civilization.

DVD Picture:
The DVD, when viewed in the component anamorphic format, exhibits dramatically improved color resolution and overall sharpness and detail due to the format’s extended vertical and horizontal bandwidth resolution. Sourced from a Sony HD transfer, colors are rich and vibrant with natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. Imagery is solid on both versions, with no apparent noise or artifacts for a pristine picture. The DVD’s picture is exemplary and preferred. The Laser Disc and both widescreen DVD ratios are framed at 1.85:1.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtracks on both the DVD and LaserDisc sound identical and project an aggressively spatially discrete soundfield during the war scenes. Otherwise, discrete surround envelopment is subtle, but constantly present on the matrix PCM. Bass extension is heightened on the discrete due to .1 low frequency effects. Dialogue generally sounds spatially integrated, though at times unnaturally ADR-produced. The orchestral music score is sweeping, with both versions projecting a wide soundstage presence with the discrete slightly more delineated and preferred.
