Notes

Story Synopsis:
With a bigger budget, bigger thrills, and big-time family entertainment, Robert Rodriguez’s "Spy Kids 2: Island Of Lost Dreams" finds OSS agents Carmen and Juni (Vega and Sabara) in the midst of another crisis situation: they have to reclaim a Transmooker Device from the evildoers who might try to use it to permanently disable energy on Earth. To top it all off, Carmen and Juni find some competition with a duo of bratty spy kids, Gary and Gerti Giggles (O’Leary and Osment). (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a fantastic HD 24p-originated picture that is sharp, nicely detailed, and carefully integrated with CGI images. Colors are warm with rich saturation, natural fleshtones, and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered throughout. While edge enhancement is occasionally noticed, its presence is not nearly as distracting as it was on the first "Spy Kids" DVD. Occasionally the picture has a “digital” appearance, with some minor pixelization. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 soundtrack is an excellent recording overall, and the listening experience is downright entertaining and delightful. The nature of this soundtrack simply calls for an animated dimensional presence, and this is just what you will experience. The music, in particular, substantially fills the listening space with substantial engagement of the surrounds. There’s also quite an abundance of acute directionality throughout, with notable, aggressive split surround activity. The dialogue is a wonderful production, with voices sounding impressively natural and nicely integrated with the visuals. Additionally, there are generous amounts to offer in terms of deep bass, and with the substantial use of the LFE channel and extension below 25 Hz, you’re sure to experience some prodigious low frequencies. Also notable is the sound design for the animated DVD menu navigation, in full 5.1. This is a great soundtrack presentation and one that is a remarkable achievement, both technically and creatively.
