Story Synopsis:
Nathan Muir (Redford) has just 24 hours to battle enemies abroad and the system inside the CIA to save his colleague, CIA agent Tom Bishop (Pitt). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a pleasing recreation of Dan Mindel’s dizzying and stylish cinematography. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, with good shadow delineation and contrast. The color scheme provides visual interest. Colors appear somewhat desaturated and pasty at times, while other scenes appear nearly monochromatic in dramatically stylized imagery. Otherwise, hues can be well balanced, with accurate fleshtones, rich hues, and deep blacks. Edge enhancement can be bothersome in high contrast scenes, and pixelization is apparent at times. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel discrete audio presentations are excellent, with state-of-the-art fidelity and general audio quality that is truly exemplary. The overall tonality of the audio is impressively neutral, and therefore obviating the need for re-equalization. Deep bass is very clean and articulate with a punchy, often well-defined presence that penetrates and occasionally puts your system to the test. The dialogue is a very good production, with natural-sounding voices and quite impressive spatial integration. The Harry Gregson-Williams music score sounds remarkably expansive and enveloping, and also delivering with a palpable, deep-down satisfying bass foundation. The split surrounds are effective, both in playing their role in generating the subtle yet effective holosonic rendering, and also in energizing the soundstage during heightened moments, such as the Vietnam War flashback and the shootout in Chapter 17. The apparent width of the soundstage is really impressive to experience, especially with the music. Last but certainly not least, many of the poignant effects, notably gunshots, have a distinct visceral signature to them and downright impressive clarity. The DTS® Digital Surround™ audio, typical of DVD releases with dual 5.1 soundtracks, delivers with slightly more prominence in the low-end, and spatial soundstaging seems just a bit more refined in terms of definition. This is an excellent outing from the rerecording team at Sony Pictures and the sound editing team at Buena Vista Sound Studios. (Perry Sun)
