Scotty Smalls moves to a new neighborhood with his mom and stepdad, and wants to learn to play baseball. The neighborhood baseball guru Rodriquez takes Smalls under his wing. They fall into adventures involving baseball, treehouse sleep-ins, the desirous lifeguard at the local pool, the snooty rival ball team, and the travelling fair.

Story Synopsis:
The Sandlot is a heartwarming family comedy about a neighborhood gang of good-natured young boys who love baseball. The new kid on the block, Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) who doesn’t have a friend in the world gets befriended by the gang’s young hero, Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez (Mike Vitar). Scotty soon makes new friends and finds himself playing baseball as well as the rest of the kids on the neighborhood sandlot. When a priceless Babe Ruth-autographed baseball falls into the clutches of the terrible beast behind the left field fence, the adventure begins as they try to retrieve the ball. The Sandlot is a terrific fun movie that will bring a nostalgic smile to anyone who remembers the joys of summer as a kid. (Gary Reber)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture appears slightly soft and lacking in fine detail. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are quite satisfying. Minor edge enhancement is noticed, and there is some loss of detail that could be attributed to noise reduction. (Suzanne Hodges)
The DVD also includes a modified 1.33:1 version (not reviewed).
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel audio is a remastering effort, and should be a welcome surround sound listening experience, primarily through the music. Fidelity is just slightly dated. The music score has been quite nicely recorded, and nicely engulfs the listener with a spatial presence all around, along with a prominent surround presence. The distribution of atmospheric effects throughout the soundfield is quite nicely holosonic. Voices exhibit much of the soundtrack’s dated character, yet sound adequately integrated with the visuals and with respectable clarity. The low-end is rather engaging with the music, due in part to the incorporation of subtle .1 LFE. (Perry Sun)
