Story Synopsis:
Based on the characters created by Ross La Manna, the fastest hands in the East re-team with the biggest mouth in the West in Rush Hour 2. In Hong Kong for a vacation, LAPD detective James Carter (Tucker) and Chief Inspector Lee of the Royal Hong Kong Police (Chan) are confronted with the biggest case of their careers-finding the people who killed two U.S. Customs agents who had been investigating a smuggling ring. With the Hong Kong and U.S. authorities fighting over jurisdiction of the case, Lee and a reluctant Carter set off on their own to crack the case. Along the way Lee and Carter must contend with the beautiful and deadly henchwoman Hu Li (Zhang Ziyi) and the alluring, mysterious and seemingly corrupt U.S. secret service agent Isabella Molina (Sanchez). The action returns stateside for a brief detour through Los Angeles before climaxing in a spectacular, action-filled finale at the opening night of the Red Dragon Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.


DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD picture exhibits sharp and detailed images, though some scenes appear slightly soft. Colors are rich and vibrant, with accurate fleshtones, and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation exhibit good balance. There is a bit of edge enhancement noticed, especially in high contrast scenes, but pixelization is infrequent. Overall, the picture is solid, and should surely appeal. (Suzanne Hodges)


Soundtrack:
The sonic presentations, in Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ are outstanding productions and truly state-of-the-art in terms of fidelity and dimensional sophistication. Throughout the movie, the soundstage is wide, open and fully engaging with liberal usage of spatiality. The end result is a listening experience that should be truly entertaining and pleasing. Imaging across the screen is impressively wide and deep, and the soundstage as a whole seems remarkably seamless at times between the screen and surround soundfields. Even in the absence of aggressive spatial distribution, which of course is characteristic for much of this soundtrack, the listening space remains wide, expansive and enveloping. The soundtracks are also, technically, remastered, offering for the first time Surround EX and DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete encoding. The back surround channel is used to enhance the sense of spaciousness behind the listener. Lalo Schiffrin’s music score is an excellent recording, and its presence nicely dovetails into the sound mix, compellingly wrapping around the listener, with a palpable, distinct low-end foundation. The judicious use of atmospheric effects convincingly immerses and places you into the appropriate three-dimensional environments. But of course the high point of this soundtrack are the action sequences, for which the holosonic soundstage fully comes alive with aggressive stereo surround separation. Another significant point of the audio, as would be expected is the low-end. Deep bass is delivered with uncanny distinctiveness, as well as powerful sub-25 Hz extension and aggressive .1 LFE activity. With the climactic explosion in Chapter 14, the low-end impact can be enough to challenge your subwoofer. Dialogue is notably natural-sounding, though also with a tendency to sometimes sound forward. The DTS Digital Surround version delivers with a bit more prominence and fullness in the low-end, which is especially noticeable with low-end passages in the music score. The DTS audio also sounds slightly better integrated spatially between the principal channel locations. Nonetheless this is an outstanding sonic achievement, with excellent fidelity, of an action-type soundtrack, heightening to its full potential the motion picture experience with liberal, effective, creative engagement of dimension, as well as dynamic and spectral range.
