Keep Case

Jim Morris never made it out of the minor leagues before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career twelve years ago. Now a married-with-children high-school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas, Jim's team makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, Jim will try out with a major-league organization. The bet proves incentive enough for the team, and they go from worst to first, making it to state for the first time in the history of the school. Jim, forced to live up to his end of the deal, is nearly laughed off the try-out field--until he gets onto the mound, where he confounds the scouts (and himself) by clocking successive 98 mph fastballs, good enough for a minor-league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Jim's still got a lot of pitches to throw before he makes it to The Show, but with his big-league dreams revived, there's no telling where he could go.

Notes

Story Synopsis:
Based on a true story, “The Rookie” tells the story of baseball player Jim Morris (Quaid), a minor league pitcher who sees the big leagues pass him by when he suffers injury to his pitching arm. Morris moves on with his life, teaching kids the love of the game. But when he is challenged to try out for a major league team, Morris learns that you’re never too old to follow your dreams. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD is a very satisfying visual experience, boasting beautiful cinematography. Images are sharp and detailed, with excellent contrast and shadow delineation. Colors are rich and well balanced, with accurate fleshtones, and deep blacks. Edge enhancement and pixelization are noticed, yet distractions are minimal. There are occasional artifacts noticed in the source element, but nothing to complain about. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack features a very nicely recorded music score, which provides for a satisfying sense of immersion, across the screen and into the surrounds. Otherwise, much of the audio is centered around the dialogue, for which voices sound remarkably natural and well-placed with the visuals. Occasionally, the music aggressively fills the surrounds. There's interesting effects associated with pitches, as well as the impact against the catcher's mitt and the bats to provide for some interesting poignancy. The surrounds also are very effective with some ambient effects, particularly those that are substantial in nature, such as the crowd in Chapter 14. Deep bass is quite clean with some articulate characteristics, along with modest .1 LFE activity. (Perry Sun)
