Notes

Story Synopsis:
Remember when you weren’t hounded every waking moment of your day with sales pitches? Come to think of it, neither do I, and Remember The Titans won’t help you with all of theforced ads it has. The sentimental story-based on actual events-stars Denzel Washington as football coach Herman Boone who becomes the first Black faculty member at a newly integrated Alexandria, Virginia high school. Unwelcome by both teachers and students, Boone is faced with the challenge of putting together a winning team made up of both races in the midst of hostility and fear. (Laurie Sevano)

DVD Picture:
The THX digitally mastered and anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a picture that is easy-on-the-eyes. Images are sharp and detailed, though some scenes are softly focused. Colors are rich and warm with nciely rendered fleshtones and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are naturally presented throughout. Minor aliasing and shimmering is noticed in finer details, but overall, the image is solid. Pixelizatoin is infrequently noticed, and there is no obtrusive edge enhancement. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The 5.1 soundtracks on this DVD are nicely produced but also fall somewhat short in terms of delivering a soundfield experience that makes effective use of dimension, particularly with the surrounds. There is a definite frontal soundstage-centric balance at times that also can compromise the ability to be convincingly engulfed into the music and effects. Dialogue is presented with clarity and reasonably good natural tonality, with the exception of a somewhat brittle sonic character that also limits effectiveness with spatial integration. The screen-based soundstage is wide with compelling stereophonic spread, and the sound effects accompanying the hits and tackles provide for notable visceral effect. Deep bass and the .1 LFE aren’t significant factors, but the low frequencies accompanying the music provide for reasonable satisfaction. Like many other DVDs, the DTS® Digital Surround™ version is preferred over the Dolby® Digital audio for a deeper, better-defined low-end presence and spatial imaging that is a bit more convincing. Nonetheless both soundtracks should deliver with reasonable satisfaction, though the sense of being in a true holosonic listening space isn’t up the level offered by the best of the current soundtracks.
