Story Synopsis:
Roy Waller (Cage) and his partner Frank (Rockwell) are professional swindlers who talk people out of giving them their hard earned cash. However, Roy is agoraphobic, neurotic, and compulsive, and his psychological problems are getting the better of him. When he discusses his troubles with his doctor, Roy is forced to face his past mistakes; mainly the fact that he left behind a child. After meeting his daughter Angela (Lohman) Roy’s life is turned upside down, especially when she wants in on the cons too. But this little girl is one quick learner, and she ends up showing Roy that you can in fact con a con man. "Matchstick Men" is based on the book by Eric Garcia.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1-framed DVD picture looks great, with images that are sharp, and with impressively rendered textures and details like facial features, clothing, and even stucco. The picture is quite stylish, with creative use of color that can be naturally balanced, or monochromatic for effect. Contrast and shadow delineation are excellent, further complementing the pleasing picture. Pixelization and edge enhancement are very minor offenders with this picture and really don’t take away from this impressive visual experience. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is engaging, exhibits excellent fidelity, is neutral in tonality, and really is just a well-done mix. Dialogue drives this film, so the key to its audio success is how natural and well-placed the dialogue is within the home theatre soundstage. The result is a very effective audio mix that places dialogue within the listening environment, as well as accurately reproducing the distinctive vocal patterns of Sam Rockwell and Nicholas Cage. There is some LFE and surround channel activity, but it is very infrequent. This soundtrack may not push the 5.1-channel envelope at all, but it is an effective sound mix and is very pleasing to experience. (Jeffrey Kern)
