It has been twenty years since Don Diego de la Vega fought Spanish oppression in Alta California as the legendary romantic hero Zorro. Having escaped from prison he transforms troubled bandit Alejandro into his successor, in order to foil the plans of the tyrannical Don Rafael Montero who robbed him of his freedom, his wife, and his precious daughter Elena all those years ago.

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD appears to exhibit the same impressive image quality as the previous version. The anamorphic DVD’s picture quality, when viewed in the component video output, is superb. Color resolution is excellent with fine textures and vivid colors, natural fleshtones, and deep and solid blacks. The LaserDisc also exhibits exemplary picture quality, with nicely delineated shadow detail, but the DVD reveals an even better gradation of shade between dark and picture black. Even at close view the DVD is absent chroma noise which dramatically enhances resolution as does the anamorphic process. There are no apparent artifacts in either picture. The LaserDIsc, letterbox and anamorphic DVD aspect ratios are framed at 2.35:1. Images are sharp and detailed, and color fidelity is excellent. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a new encodingat 448 kbps over the previous DVD version. Otherwise, the dialnorm offset is the same at –2 dB, and this current version is just slightly smoother-sounding in the midrange. The DTS® Digital Surround™ version sounds a little tighter in the low-end by comparison, but the Dolby Digital audio seems a bit more prominent. The DTS soundtrack also delivers with a bit more smoothness in the midrange and a little more seamlessness in terms of spatial rendering. Otherwise, both soundtracks have a "manufactured" quality and are above the standard reference level. Dialogue, while intelligible, sounds virtually all ADR-processed and wanting in spatial integration. The music score is nicely recorded with an expansive soundstage presence and excellent bass response. There is no shaming the discrete which is effectively active in split surround directionality. Surround envelopment is consistently aggressive and exciting. Bass extension is deep and very powerful to below 25 Hz on both versions with enhanced .1 LFE energy that is explosive in impact.
