Notes

Story Synopsis:
A remake to the 1962 "The Manchurian Candidate," this updated version stars Denzel Washington as the tormented Major Bennett Marco and Liev Schreiber as Sgt. Raymond Shaw. After the war their lives took completely different turns, with Shaw living in the present as the Vice-Presidential candidate and Marco living in the past haunted with unpleasant and disturbing memories. Based upon the film screenplay by George Axelrod and the novel by Richard Condon. (Tricia Littrell)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture has a dim, gritty appearance that is complementary to the subject matter. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep, endless blacks. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, though some scenes appear a bit “flat” and wanting in more definition. Contrast and shadow delineation are also nicely balanced, but in the darker scenes, visual information can get lost when definition drops off to black. Some pixelization and edge enhancement are noticed, and both are occasionally capable of distracting casual viewers. The picture is quite clean, with some fine film grain and a few flecks of dirt noticed in the source element. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
With an aggressive mix using each of the six channels, the Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack nicely envelopes the listening space in audio information. Dynamic range throughout the presentation is impressive, with quiet whispers and loud effects presented often, with impressive realism. Pans across the front and rear channels sound whole, but often times, pans across the side walls do not sound complete. The front stage is rather wide, with effects appearing to occur outside the physical location of the loudspeakers. Imaging around the room is rather impressive, but does not occur often enough to be a standout feature. The soundtrack is rather well done, with the loudspeakers easily disappearing, creating a truly “being there” environment. (Danny Richelieu)
