The carpenter Jesus of Nazareth, tormented by the temptations of demons, the guilt of making crosses for the Romans, pity for men and the world, and the constant call of God, sets out to find what God wills for him. But as his mission nears fulfillment, he must face the greatest temptation: the normal life of a good man. Based, not on the Gospels, but on Nikos Kazantzakis' novel of the same name.

Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, The Last Temptation Of Christ is Martin Scorsese’s controversial and thought-provoking exploration of Jesus Christ (Dafoe) and his teachings. Here, Christ is portrayed as an ordinary man filled with self-doubt and the desires of mortals.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD looks beautiful, especially when compared to the LaserDisc. Images are sharp and finely detailed with good shadow delineation and contrast. Colors are nicely balanced, and black levels are shades deeper than apparent on the LaserDisc. Minor film grain is revealed throughout, but pixelization is not too distracting. The picture mostly exhibits a solid appearance, with occasional edge enhancement and minor artifacts.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is a remastering effort that yields refinement over the LaserDisc’s matrix PCM audio in terms of spatial clarity. The discrete version distinguishes itself through some engagement of the split surrounds. Sound effects are distributed across the screen and sometimes prominently into the surrounds for an effectively holosonic listening experience. The music score fills the entire listening space with an expansive, immersive presence. The dialogue is presented with clarity, though integration with the outdoor environments sometimes seems limited. Bass is delivered with reasonable depth and some .1 LFE engagement.
