Story Synopsis:
Recognized with an Academy Award® for Best Sound, Last Of The Mohicans is a breathtaking portrait of the beauty and savagery of the colonial American frontier. Based on the classic by James Fenimore Cooper, Day-Lewis stars as frontiersman Hawkeye, the adopted son of Mohican chief Chingachgook (Means). He falls in love with Cora (Stowe) the daughter of a British Colonel, but their love is tested by the warring between their two cultures. This is the 117-minute director’s edition.

DVD Picture:
This new THX® digitally mastered, anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD, compared to the non-anamorphic DVD reviewed in Issue 39, exhibits good quality. The resolution on this DVD offers improved detail and definition over the previous release. Images are occasionally soft and a bit smeared, but overall sharpness is very good. Colors are rich and nicely balanced with deep blacks. The darkest scenes are sometimes wanting in definition, but contrast and shadow delineation are pleasing. The earlier review stated that the visual experience is not quite reference quality, and the same goes for this DVD; though it offers a dramatic improvement over the previous disc. Source element artifacts and minor film grain are noticed, but overall the picture is quite clean. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack, as previously reviewed, presents a nicely enveloping surround presence with a wide frontal soundstage and nice spatial definition. This version is also a noticeable improvement over the previous DVD, delivering a deeper, more pronounced low-end, as well as a slightly more enveloping presence and more resolute spatial soundfield. However, the DTS Digital Surround version is preferred for offering a slightly more resolute listening experience in terms of spatial delineation and the low-end. The soundtrack delivers deep, enhanced low frequencies from the .1 LFE. Randy Edelman’s music score is nicely recorded and engaging. (Perry Sun/Gary Reber)
