Story Synopsis:
This enchanting medieval fantasy adventure tells of two star-crossed lovers caught in an evil spell. The beautiful heroine (Pfeiffer) and her beloved knight (Hauer) were torn apart by an evil bishop (Wood) whose unrequited love for her cursed them “always together, eternally apart.” By day she is a hawk, by night he is a wolf. To end the spell, the knight vows to break into the bishop’s stronghold, but he cannot do it alone. He enlists the help of The Mouse (Broderick), a quick-fingered pickpocket with a rapid-fire tongue.
DVD Picture:
The DVD, framed at 2.40:1, is not anamorphic. The picture exhibits a dark character throughout the generally natural color fidelity. Images are sharp and detailed with mediocre shadow detail and contrast. The DVD appears to be mastered from a composite source, due to apparent moiré patterns and other aliasing problems.
Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has been remastered and encoded in Dolby® Digital, but rather than the credited 5.1 mix, this sounds to be a 4.0 mix with monaural surrounds and no .1 low frequency effects. Surround envelopment is limited to subtle music and occasional ambience. Dialogue sounds distorted at times. Otherwise, the sonic presentation is quite satisfying.
