Story Synopsis:
Based on the novel by James Ellroy, this stylish, “thrilling tale of police corruption and Hollywood glamour” demands full attention as three diverse Los Angeles cops investigate the same central crime. Sergeants Bud White (Crowe), Jack Vincennes (Spacey) and Ed Exley (Pearce) find themselves tangled in a twisted web of corruption that goes deeper into the police department than they could have ever imagined. Academy Award®-winner Kim Basinger costars.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphic, dual-layered DVD features more fully saturated colors and fleshtones, when compared to the LaserDisc. Color fidelity is excellent with natural fleshtones, rich and warm colors and the deepest, truest blacks. Images are extremely sharp and detailed with superb shadow detail and contrast. The film, which takes place at night or in darker scene settings, looks absolutely stunning. Some minor noise is occasionally apparent in interior scenes on both versions. The DVD’s anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio is 2.35:1.
Soundtrack:
Both the Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and matrix PCM soundtracks are superb. Dialogue is perfectly natural sounding with excellent spatial integration. The music score is wonderful sounding and spread across the soundstage. The discrete presentation images slightly wider and directional effects are precisely delineated. Occasionally, gunshots and effects activate the split surround capability of the Dolby Digital soundtrack. This is an outstanding soundtrack in all aspects that also achieves quiet ambient soundfield delineation.
