Story Synopsis:
When Matty Demaret (Pepper) was 12-years-old, he couldn't pull the trigger when asked to kill his father’s traitor, and now his dad (Hopper) is sure that he has a coward for a son. Uncle Teddy (Malkovich) decides to see if Matty has what it takes to be in the mob and asks him go to Spokane to collect $500,000. Matty has his pilot friend Johnny (Green) fly there to pick up the bag of cash, but when he panics during a refueling stop in Montana, he leaves the bag on the airstrip and it disappears. Matty and two other friends (Diesel and Davoli) head to Montana to track down the bag but the "Knockaround Guys" soon find out that it’s not going to be as easy as they think, especially when the sheriff (Noonan) gets involved. And when Uncle Teddy shows up, things really get out of hand...that is until Matty discovers the truth that had been right there in front of him his entire life.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a nicely rendered picture that can be slightly dim, and should be viewed in a completely blackened room for optimal visual information in the darker scenes. The picture is sharp and detailed, with nicely rendered contrast for its dim nature. Colors can be rich and well balanced, with accurate fleshtones, vibrant hues, and deep blacks. While the picture has an overall smooth character, finer details can break up slightly due to pixelization, and there is minor edge enhancement noticed at times. (Suzanne Hodges)
The disc also includes a modified 1.33:1 (4:3) version of the movie (not reviewed).
Soundtrack:
The 5.1 channel soundtracks offer a downright engaging listening experience, with music that is fully spread throughout the listening space, prominently filling the surrounds. This is also a very well-recorded soundtrack, with remastering courtesy of MiCasa Multimedia. The soundstage presence is often downright energetic and even intense, with quite an abundance of deep bass and aggressive LFE channel activity. The music seems to be the predominant dimensional element, but this soundtrack is also not without the instances of aggressive sound effects positioning, such as the shootout in Chapter 20. The dialogue features well-recorded voices that sound natural in tonality and spatial integration. The DTS® Digital Surround™ version edges out slightly for exhibiting a little more refinement with spatial rendering. (Perry Sun)
