Veteran thief, Joe Moore (Gene Hackman), is a pro who has done his last job. Now he just wants to get out of the business and sail off in to the sunset. But with his "fence", Bergman (Danny DeVito), holding back on the money from the last robbery, Joe and his team are not going anywhere - not until they pull off the mother of all heists. To ensure Moore and his team do the job his way, Bergman is sending his young, arrogant nephew, Jimmy Silk, to oversee it. With little respect and a thin veil of trust hanging over the job, pulling off the heist is the least of Moore's fears.

Notes

Story Synopsis:
Joe Moore (Hackman) is a veteran thief who is so cool, when he goes to bed sheep count him. Nobody can get the goods like Joe. That’s why Mickey Bergman (DeVito) insists that Joe execute one last “Heist” before he checks out of the business for good. David Mamet’s tortuous tale of thievery and double-crossing is a calculated and, at times, suspenseful thriller. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits images that are nicely rendered, with pleasing sharpness and detail. Though the picture can have a slightly soft appearance, the overall quality is quite natural. Colors are well balanced, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. The source element is revealing of occasional dirt and film grain, but nothing that should be too distracting. There is some minor pixelization, but rarely is there edge enhancement noticed. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The DVD’s multichannel discrete soundtrack overall has been well recorded, though is also slightly forward-sounding as well. The predominant multichannel element is the music score, which features fine fidelity and a palpably immersive soundstage presence. Voices have an impressive natural-sounding character, with only the limitation being that they sound a little forward. Directivity seems somewhat reserved, as does the low-end. The .1 LFE, as well, does not seem to be a notable factor. However, the use of dynamic range is quite effective, especially with gunshots. (Perry Sun)
