Story Synopsis:
In this, the third and last in the series of Man With No Name sagas (even though he had a name!), "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly," Clint Eastwood reluctantly teams up with not one, but two bounty hunters (Van Cleef and Wallach) to claim a cache of $200,000 in stolen gold. The film is presented here in its original 179-minute version. (Gary Reber)
DVD Picture:
This new anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD picture looks a bit better than the previously released DVD (reviewed in Issue 31), with some improvements in contrast and color balance. Though dated, color fidelity is generally natural with brownish fleshtones, this new version offers a more refined color palette. There is a certain softness to the picture, with details and textures lacking definition. Still, those pivotal close-up shots of a scowling cowboy detail every pore and whisker. The source element is revealing of some dirt and scratches that can be distracting at times (like in Chapter 13), as well as some film grain. Edge enhancement and pixelization are evident at times. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The remastered Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack sounds very good in comparison to the previous DVD, but the new version is still riddled with some problems. These negatives include lip-sync problems, sometimes harsh and shrill sounding dialogue, and badly recorded dialogue with varying degrees of believability. (See the "Reconstructing The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" featurette for details on the challenges involved with the film's sound mix.) On a positive note, the new version has some very nice and effective channel separation across the front three screen channels along with an overall soundtrack that sounds quite good when you consider the age of the original sound elements. The original DVD was recorded in Dolby Digital mono at an encoded bit rate of 192 kpbs and doesn’t sound too bad in comparison to the newer DVD version at 448 kpbs. The newer version is the much better one by far, with a more expansive soundstage and a more inmersive listening experience. (The original mono Italian version is also included.) (Jeffrey Kern)
