Notes

Story Synopsis:
Readily admitting to previously making mistakes in the application of military power, the Academy Award®-winning documentary "The Fog Of War" explores the life of 85-year-old former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. Focusing on his accomplishments as well as his mistakes, the film explores NcNamara’s early days beginning in 1918 up until his life today. Since retiring, McNamara continues to work on problems of poverty, world health, and economic development. Mr. McNamara’s history is presented in 11 simple lessons with footage included on the highlights of his career. (Tricia Littrell)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture is of variable quality due to different source elements that make up this documentary. There are some creative visuals, interview segments, stock footage and crisp transitions. The interview segments offer satisfying color fidelity, and blacks are deep and solid. Most of the anomalies with this picture are related to the various source elements. There is no distracting pixelization or edge enhancement. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel documentary-style soundtrack plays so much differently than a normal documentary usually sounds. Often in documentary presentations, the sound design is very straightforward, without much sonic diversity and activity in more than just the front center channel. This presentation employs excellent fidelity, impressive spatial dimensionality, and superb tonality, as there is substantial and sometimes highly aggressive sonic activity in each of the 5.1-channels. Although much of the visual images shown onscreen are from footage taken many decades ago, sound effects like that of explosions of artillery are effectively mixed and reverberate nicely and with impact in the LFE channel. The real highlight of the presentation is the mesmerizing original score by Philip Glass. Glass’s score emotionally accentuates the serious discussions about war and conflict by Robert McNamara and gives the audio presentation virtual soul. When dialogue is present in the front center channel, the musical accompaniment plays wonderfully in all five channels. This is just simply a well-recorded soundtrack. (Jeffrey Kern)
