Notes

Story Synopsis:
Don’t Say A Word is a riveting thriller, based on the book by Andrew Klavan, about a psychiatrist who desperately needs something from one of his most troubled patients. When Dr. Conrad’s (Douglas) eight year old daughter is kidnapped, his only hope for her safe return is to pry a six-digit number from the memory of Elisabeth Burrows (Murphy), but time isn’t on his side. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits stylized images to give the picture an unconventional appearance. Director Gary Fleder wanted to stay away from a look that was too glossy or too clean. Blue overtones give the picture a cold, harsh feeling, while the psychiatric hospital often utilizes unsettling greens. Elsewhere in the movie, colors are nicely balanced, with rich hues. While images are quite sharp and nicely detailed, fine details smear slightly, and could possibly be a negative side effect of noise reduction. Edge enhancement is noticed on occasion. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The DVD’s Dolby® Digital and DTS® Digital Surround™ 5.1 audio versions are both very impressive, certainly reflecting the current state-of-the-art in movie soundtrack production. The music is a great recording, with a characteristic spaciousness that convincingly engages the dimensional soundfield and therefore imparting an uncanny sense of expansion and immersion. Also characteristic of the music, and of the soundtrack in general, is a full-bodied, occasionally prominent deep bass presence, along with active .1 LFE activity. Overall fidelity of the soundtrack recording is exemplary, particularly noticeable in the natural-sounding character of the dialogue. The distribution of effects all around is also impressive, with those of an atmospheric nature often making the audio seem as if it resides in a significantly larger space than that defined by the speaker locations. The DTS Digital Surround audio is slightly preferred for its seemingly more refined low-end definition and spatial coherence. (Perry Sun)
