Story Synopsis:
Late one night in 1988, eccentric high school student Donnie Darko (Gyllenhaal) follows a voice outside of his home, only to learn that a giant rabbit named Frank has informed him that the end of the world is coming...soon. When he arrives home the next morning, he finds his family outside and a crane lifting a jet engine out of his bedroom. Coincidence? Donnie thinks not, and begins to believe in Frank’s prophecy. DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD exhibits pleasing quality, with images that are sharp and detailed. The color scheme is generally well balanced, with accurate hues. However, the picture appears to be slightly “glazed over,” with somewhat weak, undefined colors. Contrast and shadow delineation should be generally satisfying. There is minor edge enhancement noticed, but no distracting pixelization. The source element is revealing of occasional dirt and artifacts. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is very nicely spacious and enveloping throughout, with a dose of creativity to accompany the “surreal” moments. Fidelity is remarkable, and the characteristic tonality seems neutral. Voices sound natural and distinct with notable spatial integration. But the soundtrack’s main asset is its spatiality, which is compelling with the liberal distribution of music and effects throughout the listening space. Imaging is particularly wide and deep laterally, and split surround envelopment is equally effective, whether subtle or aggressive in nature. The music is very well-recorded and has a prominently spacious presence, and also a satisfying low-end foundation. Deep bass is remarkable with full extension below 25 Hz in the main channels and the .1 LFE. The balance of the soundstage is often somewhat toward the screen, but when the music is very active, this balance shifts toward the surrounds and noticeably more so during the surreal POV scenes. This is an exemplary, well-recorded soundtrack production that utilizes the dimensional soundfield to its full advantage. (Perry Sun)
