Story Synopsis:
Don Juan DeMarco is a sensuous comedy about an infectious dreamer. Marlon Brando stars as Dr. Jack Meckler, a psychologist who takes on the case of treating a delusional young man (Depp) who believes he is the legendary lover Don Juan DeMarco.
DVD Picture:
The DVD is not anamorphic, but is beautifully rendered with excellent color fidelity, sharpness and detail. Even when compared to the superb LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 17, the DVD delivers a picture with improved clarity. Shadow delineation and contrast are nicely rendered. Color fidelity is exceptional, and fully saturated, with natural fleshtones, rich and vibrant hues and deep, pure blacks. The picture is matted at 1.85:1.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital discrete soundtrack is virtually identical to the matrix PCM LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 17. The Dolby Digital version does not always sound as open and spatially dimensional as the matrix PCM soundtrack. The sound is mostly monaural focused with dialogue that is generally natural sounding but often wanting in spatial integration. The music score is nicely presented with an expansive soundstage and split surrounds. Bass extension is limited, with no .1 low frequency effects.
