Notes

Story Synopsis:
Bartleby and Loki (Affleck and Damon) are two down-to-earth angels looking for a way back into heaven. So they are thrilled at the discovery of a loophole in Catholic Dogma that would award them a clean slate, if...they can make it to New Jersey and through the rededicated archway of St. Marks Church-site of Cardinal Glick’s (George Carlin) “Catholicism WOW!” campaign. Unfortunately, their little ploy will destroy all human existence in the process, so the Voice Of God (Rickman) decides to throw a few road blocks in their path. “Clerks” fans will be happy to know that Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson (Dante and Randal) return in cameo roles. Come on! Cast off that cloak of piety, and laugh out loud with this on-the-money satire. (Laurie Sevano)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 picture, viewed in component video, exhibits a picture that is quite pleasing throughout. Images are sharp and detailed, with nicely rendered definition. Colors are rich and fully saturated, with balanced fleshtones and deep blacks. Clarity is lacking in some areas, with the picture appearing somewhat ‘pasty.’ Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered, with a natural gradation of visual information in the darker scenes. Minor edge enhancement and the slightest pixelization are apparent, but overall, the picture is quite pleasing.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack sports a satisfying multichannel music experience but otherwise is quite typical in terms of dimension. The dialogue, which is the driving element of the soundtrack, isn’t very well integrated with the visuals, having inconsistent ambiance and an excessive "chesty" presence. Sound effects are screen-oriented with gentle spread into the surrounds. The music has ample depth across the screen and subtle surround envelopment. Deep bass is sometimes deep and rumbling, even powerful at times with .1 LFE engagement. Except for the dialogue, this is a good soundtrack production that should prove its worthiness with the storytelling.
