Story Synopsis:
Filmed on location in San Francisco, Dirty Harry is a riveting action thriller dedicated to the police officers “who gave their lives in the line of duty.” Harry Callahan (Eastwood) is a tough, streetwise cop assigned to find a vicious rooftop sniper, known as Scorpio (Robinson), who is demanding a ransom with the threat of killing again. Callahan’s desperation to catch the ruthless killer leads him to disregard the Bill of Rights-and their cat-and-mouse game becomes more deadly. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture is improved over the previously released DVD. Images are sharper, with better detail and definition into backgrounds. Colors appear more fully saturated and balanced. Hues are rich and fleshtones appear accurately rendered. Blacks are deep and solid. The picture is generally solid and smooth, with little pixelization or edge enhancement to distract. Contrast and shadow delineation are also improved. The source element is revealing of some film grain and infrequent artifacts. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel remastered soundtrack is the same as that for the previous DVD release. As reviewed previously, the music score is dramatically spatial. The soundstage is wide with deep, well-defined bass, and the overall soundtrack is balanced and smooth. Sound effects are directionalized, but surround is limited to subtle envelopment. Despite the dated fidelity, the dialogue sounds respectably natural, with quite notable spatial integration. (Perry Sun/Gary Reber)
