Notes

Story Synopsis:
McClane once again finds himself having a really bad day in Die Hard With A Vengeance. This time he joins forces with Zeus, a reluctant civilian (Jackson), to try and outwit a riddle-speaking terrorist (Irons) who plans to empty the Federal Reserve Bank-and blow up New York City if he doesn’t get his way. (Gary Reber)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced, THX digitally mastered 2.35:1 DVD exhibits a slightly improved picture when compared to the previously released THX-certified non-anamorphic DVD. While noise is not as much a factor on the new disc when compared to the previous version, the appearance of edge enhancement is unacceptable. Ghostly halos create an annoying hard edge throughout. Images are generally sharp, but fine details and clarity are wanting. Colors are generally well balanced, but border oversaturation at times. The picture can appear overly bright with mediocre contrast. The picture has a “pasty,” plugged-up quality that is completely unattractive. While in every way, this DVD is preferred to the non-anamorphic version, and die-hard fans will undoubtedly be delighted with any improvement, as an anamorphic DVD, its quality can be unimpressive. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack for this DVD isn’t notably different than for the previous. The DTS Digital Surround version, like the first two Die Hard DVDs, is preferred for having a subtly yet noticeably deeper low-end presence, as well as spatial delineation that resoluts in a more coherent dimensional soundstage with refined atmosphere and imaging. Like the first two in the Die Hard series, the soundtracks are both outstanding with remarkable utilization of frequency and dynamic range. Fidelity is of course the most refined for this installment in the Die Hard trilogy, as is the creativity in terms of spaciousness and dimensional utilization. (Perry Sun)
