Notes

Story Synopsis:
The Dark Crystal is a magical and imaginative marvel from the genius of Jim Henson that tells the story of the gentle Gelflings and their race against time to save the good light of their world before it is destroyed by evil. In order to do this, they must find the missing piece to a dark crystal.

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD picture, viewed in component video exhibits a superb transfer. Colors are naturally balanced with rich hues and deep blacks. Images exhibit fine depth and definition. Only occasional pixelization is apparent, though video artifacts are frequent. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio measures 2.35:1.

Soundtrack:
The remastered 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital soundtrack delivers a well-defined sonic character and a wide screen soundstage. In general, the soundfield is biased towards the screen channels, and fidelity is dated, as expected. Dialogue is intelligible, but sounds a little bright and is placed too far forward. The music has an expansive stereophonic presence. The utilization of the surround channels is wanting.

DVD/Previously Reviewed LD Comparative Review:

The anamorphically enhanced DVD picture, viewed in component video and compared to the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 10, exhibits a superb transfer that is improved in all aspects. Colors are more naturally balanced and images exhibit finer depth and definition. Only occasional pixelization is apparent, though video artifacts are frequent. The anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio measures 2.35:1.

The remastered 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital soundtrack on the DVD differs from the Dolby Surround matrix encoded PCM on the previously reviewed LaserDisc by delivering a more refined sonic character and a wider screen soundstage. In general, the soundfield is biased towards the screen channels, and fidelity is dated, as expected. Dialogue is intelligible, but sounds a little bright and is placed too far forward. The music, has an expansive stereophonic presence. The utilization of the surround channels is wanting.
