Story Synopsis:
Winner of Academy Awards® for Cinematography and Sound Effects Editing, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind sparked more interest than ever before in the possibility we are not alone...and out government knows it. Richard Dreyfuss and others inexplicably drawn to a very specific location where they discover an entire UFO landing compound ready to welcome...what? The version here is the same 137-minute cut also seen on the most-recent LaserDisc. (Laurie Sevano)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture exhibits image quality that should surely please. Images are sharp and well defined. At times, the picture exhibits slightly soft images, but there is no apparent smearing. Though somewhat dated, colors are well balanced. Fleshtones can be naturally rendered, though at times a bit reddish, and blacks are quite deep and solid. There is some apparent edge enhancement, giving the picture a hard-edged character at times. Infrequent minor shimmering is noticed. Compared to the previously reviewed LaserDiscs, the DVD is much more refined with improved clarity and contrast. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel soundtracks, like the previous LaserDisc, have a definite balance toward the screen, with surround activity that is occasionally, though somwhat surprisingly sporadic. Fidelity is certainly dated, even at times imparting a “tinny” sonic character. Nonetheless, imaging across the screen is amply wide and deep, and the surrounds, do provide for adequate, sometimes aggressive immersion, albeit with virtually no stereo separation. The .1 LFE gets quite a bit of activity. The low end is occasionally impressive and penetrating, notably the dramatic alien ship landing in Chapters 22 and 23. The DTS Digital Surround version delivers with noticeably greater deep bass, and sounds slightly more refined in the upper midrange. (Perry Sun)
