Notes

Story Synopsis:
Based on actual events and the novel by Paulo Lins, "City Of God" ("Citade De Deus") takes place in crime-ridden Rio de Janeiro and depicts how a group of troublemaking kids known as the Tender Trio become crimelords over the course of a decade. Nominated for four Academy Awards. (Suzanne Hodges)

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture exhibits images that are harshly stylized and perfectly complementary to the storytelling of the realities of living in poverty. Images are often highly contrasted, and the darker scenes offer limited visual information. Colors can be vibrant and nicely balanced, or awash in filtered hues. There is inherent grain and noise noticed in the picture at times, and the handheld camerawork can be dizzying. There is little in the way of edge enhancement or pixelization, but occasional smearing is noticed. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital mix audibly reproduces the nasty, gritty, and brutally violent world found on the streets of Rio de Janeiro quite well with fidelity that impresses. I was quite surprised at the aggressive nature of the audio mix, as all five channels were more active than I had originally anticipated before I experienced the presentation. Most of the audio presentation resides in the front three screen channels and atmospheric ambience is nicely handled by the back two surround channels. (Jeffrey Kern)
