Story Synopsis:
Very different from the other Batman movies, "Batman Begins" stars Christian Bale as the caped crusader and Michael Caine as Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred. After losing his parents in a mugging, young Bruce grows up to be an angry man bent on revenge and retribution. After traveling the world and learning to fight, Bruce returns to his home in Gotham City determined to free the good citizens from the evil that has claimed the city. Based on characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman created by Bob Kane. (Tricia Spears)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture looks quite impressive, with colors that pop from the screen with rich saturation at times, while other times exhibiting a desaturated appearance that is complementary to the dark mood of the story. Images are sharp and detailed, with nicely rendered textures. In the dark night scenes, as the Dark Knight looks out over Gotham City, blacks are truly deep, but with excellent shadow delineation. There is very rarely any distracting pixelization, although minor edge halos and slight smearing are occasional. Despite those minor nitpicks, this movie looks amazing. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack can be fully engaging, with a good use of each of the available channels to saturate the soundspace. Dialogue can sound natural with good tonality, but occasionally a hiss can be heard over the dialogue that can be distracting and easily detectable when it does occur. A high-pitched hum can also be heard sporadically over the sonics. The LFE channel is used well, highlighting the articulate bass delivered through it and the full-range channels. Music is mixed well around the room using the corner channels, with little music delivered through the center channel. Dialogue is recorded well, with good detail and warmth. Distinct imaging in the surrounds is generally limited, although there are some scenes that incorporate it well. In all, the soundtrack is enjoyable (even with its quirks), and really adds to the overall experience. (Danny Richelieu)
