Story Synopsis:
This slick action thriller stars Ford as United States President James Marshall who delivers an impassioned address to a room full of Russian dignitaries. Following his speech that praised the capture of the brutal fascist tyrant General Radek (Prochnow), Marshall joins his wife and daughter aboard “Air Force One,” and heads for Washington. But the plane is hijacked by Radek loyalists (including Oldman) with plans to force the release of their leader by holding Marshall hostage.
DVD Picture:
The LaserDisc picture, framed at 2.35:1, exhibits excellent color fidelity with accurate fleshtones, rich and warm colors and deep, solid blacks. Color fidelity is even more fully saturated in the DVD’s anamorphic widescreen version. Images are sharp and detailed, although some scenes are a bit soft and seem out of focus on the LaserDisc version. Shadow detail and contrast are excellent. There is no noise or artifacts. The DVD component video anamorphic widescreen picture renders the finishing touches, bettering the LaserDisc in every aspect of visual quality. The DVD’s anamorphic and letterbox aspect ratio is 2.35:1.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete soundtrack is magnificent in sound design with an effective holosonic soundfield. Sound effects are directionalized in each quadrant of the soundfield for an exciting experience. Deep bass adds to the excitement with power hitting below 25Hz. The music score is beautifully recorded with a soundstage presence that images wide and deep, though the Dolby Digital version is slightly harsher than the PCM. The dialogue sounds perfectly natural and spatially integrated throughout. This is an incredible soundtrack that rates among the very best.
