Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.

My quick rating 6,4/10. Aside from the tiemframe of being around Halloween, this really is more of a comedy/romance story that just delves into the supernatural. When it does so, it actually suceeds quite well and uses that only to move forward the story itself of sisters that are raised as witches and do their best to avoid using their powers for themselves (as absolutely no one reading this would do). Destined to forever be alone and not finding love, they fumble around in trying to find it. But when Gillians (Kidman) violent boyfriend, played almost comically by Goran Visnjic, is accidentally killed by the sisters in self defense, then the spirit of him threatens to bring them out as the pwoerful sisters they are. Of course, a detective, played with no enthusiasm for his role by Aidan Quinn, catches wind of this and is sure to find out just what happened to poor old Jimmy. That is in a nutshell the flick here, but the comedy is a bit darker than standard fare and the effects when used are quite nice to see. The cast all aside from Quinn are superb, as expected, especially the aunts, played by Stanning and Wiest. These characters are really what drives the movie and keeps it entertaining throughout. A touching lead in to Halloween and a nice treat since I really don't think I ever saw this movie, so thank you @dee dee for the recommendation.
