A children's ghost story comes to terrifying life in this gut-wrenching thriller about a graduate student whose research into modern folklore summons the spirit of the dead. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) laughs when she interviews college freshmen about their superstitions. But when she hears about Candyman, a slave spirit with a hook hand who is said to haunt Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green housing project, she thinks she has a new twist for her thesis.Braving the gang-ridden territory to visit the site of a brutal murder, Helen arrogantly assumes Candyman can't really exist... until he appears, igniting a string of terrifying, tragic slayings. But the police don't believe in monsters, and they charge Helen with the grisly crimes. And only one person can set her free ..... Candyman.

My quick rating - 7,5/10. Oh do I love this movie. A truly haunting character, the Candyman, brought to voice and life so perfectly by Tony Todd. Clive Barker tells a tale worthy of urban legend status, taking the bloody mary one to a whole new level. There have been quite a few imitators of this idea, especially lately, but none can touch this flick. And to use a setting that is about as terrifying as possible in reality makes it even better. If you don't know anything about the Cabrini Green projects, look them up. Just driving by them years ago was frightening and I used to do it all the time. Anyway, aside from the setting, the story of calling a killer up from the ghost of a dead man via the mirror is partially the focus, since maybe it is just a gang thug that is using the supernatural story to hide his crimes. Who am I kidding, Clive Barker wrote this, of course, when Virgina Madsen summons the Candyman, he obliges her. When the Candyman does show up, he leaves behind a trail of blood, pruposely for others to follow. Since the cops don't believe in fairy tales, they have to arrest Helen (Madsen) for the slayings. This will cement his time in history, and in the minds of his followers who fear him. Candyman just needs his name to be heard, and his thoughts to invoke fright in all. The single lines spoken, hauntingly by Todd will remain with you for many years after the first time you see this movie. Top this movie off with one of the most disturbing musical scores by Phillip Glass and you are found hearing the music box play in your mind over and over again. What are you waiting for, go check the mirror, and speak Candyman......oh shit, that is the 5th time I typed his.......
