My quick rating - 8,8/10. Another true classic of cinema, even though Stephen King was not a fan of the movie, and has gone on record many times to voice that opinion. Stanley Kubrick creates a horrifying vision of Kings book ofthe same name. To say the performances absolutely drive this movie is the understatement of the century. A brilliant acting job by both leads, Nicholson and Duvall. Being sent to take care of a hotel in the middle of nowhere, the family finds themselves in a haunted and spiritually evil place. The hotel itself slowly starts breaking down the psyche of Jack and we watch him tumble down the hill of his own sanity slowly and methodically. The son in this movie has a certain gift, the shining, which is a form of being psychic and communicating with others via his power. This is explored through the flick in his ability to communicate with the dismissed chef, Scatman Crothers to attempt to get help. There are also little sides such as when Danny is possessed by a spirit which is dismissed as his imaginary friend until his behavior gets more frightening to the parents. From scene to scene, each attention to detail is astounding to watch (and if you read about it, with good reason, scenes were shot many times over to achieve perfection). Books can be written about this movie alone, and have been. A true tour de force from beginning to end, and the 2.5 hours will fly by in a blink without a thought of boredom even with the lack of kills and blood shed. Easily in the top hundred ever made and a must see for anyone. Check IMDB for the trivia if you want to get some further interesting info about this masterpiece. As much as I would love to write pages on this flick, I do bog myself down with reviewing movies for free. So I have to cut them short, or watch less. I chose to watch more. Speaking of, make sure you see this movie. Period.
