My quick rating - 6.7/10. This flick brings the beloved video game characters to the big screen in a way that is not only surprising but also remarkably entertaining. Paying homage to the iconic game franchise, the film manages to capture the essence of Mario and Luigi's world while delivering a fresh and humorous take on their adventures.
The story kicks off with Brooklyn plumbers and brothers, Mario and Luigi, in the midst of an everyday job to fix a water main. However, a twist of fate leads them into a fantastical and magical new realm through a mysterious pipe. As the duo explores this vibrant universe, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they become separated. What follows is a heartwarming and hilarious quest as Mario (Chris Pratt) embarks on an epic adventure to find his brother Luigi (Charlie Day). The casting choices for the characters deserve praise, especially after all the backlash it was given online as the actors bring a charismatic energy to their roles. The chemistry between Mario and Luigi adds a genuine warmth to their sibling dynamic, making their journey all the more engaging. The supporting characters they encounter along the way, including the enigmatic Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and the scene-stealing Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), contribute to the movie's charm and humor. Yes, I know everyone loved Bowser (Jack Black) but I was kind of disappointed in him because he usually is the show stealer.
One of the standout aspects of the movie is its ability to appeal to both die-hard fans of the Super Mario franchise and newcomers alike. The film is packed with cleverly placed easter eggs and references that pay tribute to the games, delighting fans who have grown up with these characters and their adventures. I am sure this rings very familiar to anyone who watches this with a die-hard Nintendo gamer. With its great mix of heart, humor, and nostalgic nods, the movie offers an enjoyable time for fans and casual viewers alike.
